Cameron's 1 Ton Survey Post

Cameron’s One Ton Survey Post is situated on a dirt track about five kilometres south west of Mungindi. It marks the 1879 -1881 trigonometrical survey of the Queensland - New South Wales border. The 1882 post is rare as one of the largest timber survey posts in Australia. It marks the end of the survey by John Cameron at Latitude 29°. The survey began at the Zero obelisk erected at Barringun in 1879 and travelled in a westerly direction over a period of 12 months and 15 days to the South Australian border. Cameron then returned to Barringun in 1881 and began surveying in an easterly direction, until he reached the Barwon River. When the survey was completed in October 1881, Cameron celebrated by placing a wooden post, weighing one ton and carved with his name, on the riverbank.
