Cloncurry Post Office

The Cloncurry Post Office is a must-see on your visit to Cloncurry. Continuously used since its construction in 1906, the Cloncurry Post Office stands testament to the districts’ early 20th century development boom which enabled this geographically isolated town to become a major regional centre. The 1906 post office replaced the 1883 building and carried on the function of providing rapid communication through mail and electric telegraph services. The large single storey timber building was a T17 type of timber post office, with a twin porch and gable, designed and erected by the Queensland Works Department between 1906 and 1921. This particular post office type was the most significant in the 20th century due to its aesthetic appeal, quality construction detail and climatic considerations. Cloncurry became a centre for mail, telephone and telegraph services in the 1950s and a brick extension to the building was constructed in 1954 to accommodate these services. Today, the Cloncurry Post Office continues to provide its services and is conveniently located near the Cloncurry Central Hotel, the Cloncurry War Memorial and the heritage-listed Sheaffe Street shops.
