Yungaburra Post Office and residence

The Yungaburra Post office is a typical country post office. Built in 1924 to a standard design, it included a residence for the post master and his family. When the railway first came to Yungaburra in 1910, the railway station served as the post office. The construction of the purpose built post office pre-empted the construction of the Gillies Highway between Yungaburra and Gordonvale, which opened in June 1926. The post office and residence were built by Brisbane contractor John Doyle and were completed by the end of 1924. Like most country post offices, it functioned as an agency for the Commonwealth Bank and included a telephone exchange. In 1974, with changes in post office operations, the property passed into private hands, although continues to operate the postal service.
