Court House, Police Station and Residence

The Police buildings along Cedar Street date to 1921. While the Police Reserve was established in 1912, the first police building on the site was a stable for the horses. The first policeman, Constable Pike, rented a house nearby. He had relocated from Cairns and commenced duties in August 1913. A lock-up was built in 1914. The local progress association continually lobbied for a Court of Petty Sessions, but this was denied for some time. Assisted by the efforts of local Member of Parliament, W N Gillies the townsfolk were eventually successful when the old Allumbah provisional school building was relocated for use as a courthouse. It had been built in 1909, and had outlived its purpose. The building was relocated in the early part of 1921 and a small office built on the veranda in September 1921. Internally, the building included a court room and an office shared by the Clerk of Petty Sessions and the Dairy Inspector. Alterations were undertaken to both buildings in 1938. The lock-up was removed around 2000.
