Woolooga Rail Bridge

This picturesque rail bridge is located about 1.2 km south of the town of Woolooga on the now disused Kilkivan railway line. The Woolooga Rail Bridge was built in 1884 and crosses Wide Bay Creek on the line built from Maryborough to Kilkivan. The Kilkivan branch line was built in the hope of stimulating gold and copper mining and was later extended to the South Burnett. The nearby Dickabram Bridge is also on this line. By the early 20th century, dairying became the main industry, and in 1917, there were investigations into opening a butter factory adjacent to the railway line in Woolooga; however, the project was eventually shelved. During the 1930s, when larger locomotives operated on the line, the bridge was strengthened by adding timber piers in the centre of the existing 30metre spans. The rail line was closed progressively from 1964 and the last train ran across the Woolooga Rail Bridge in 2005.
