Queensland National Bank (former)

The basic structure of this building dates to 1863, when a two-storey store was built on the site by W Southerden. Queensland National Bank acquired the property in 1873. Auctioneers Stoward Bryant and Co then occupied the ground floor, with solicitors housed on the first floor. The bank operated from a small timber building at the rear and relocated to the main building in 1903. In 1914, architect F H Faircloth was commissioned to substantially redesign the premises. Its reconstruction comprised the use of red bricks with white tuck points, and sandstone coloured entablature, mouldings and embellishments, set off with full height Corinthian columns on solid pedestals. The contractor was N C Steffensen. The bank had moved into the new premises by 14 June 1915. A number of bank mergers during the early 20th century led to the sale of the building in 1966 to the Burrum Shire Council. The shire was decommissioned in 1976 and the building was sold and used for office tenancies. In the 1970s, the building housed a doctor’s surgery and it was given the name of ‘Woodstock House’; the same name as the doctor’s private home. A confectionary store has operated in part of the building in recent years.
