Eskdale

This private home was built for the Mayor of Maryborough, James Dowzer, around 1864. He arrived in Maryborough in 1854, establishing himself as a saddler and storekeeper. He was elected Mayor in 1862. In August 1864, tenders were called for the brick and stone work for the house; the bricks apparently made on site. Hand-made brass nails were used in the internal door construction and internal joinery was cedar. Before the house was completed, Dowzer sold it to solicitor Edward Corser who named it after ‘Eskdale’ in the Lakes District of Northern England. Edward died in 1874 and his son Edward Bernard Corser acquired the property. Edward was a leading merchant and later a member of both Queensland and Federal Parliament. The property was transferred to his son Edward Stewart Corser after his death in 1929 and it remained in the family until 1975. This is a private home and not publically accessible.
