St Brigid's Church

St Brigid’s Catholic Church, set against the hill at Stuart, is a pretty little timber church. It reflects both gothic and federation styling. The church was built in 1904 by Townsville builders Doig and Ritchie, who supplied eight timber pews. Local builders and timber merchants Messrs Rooney and Co supplied the pine altar and other furnishings. The land had been acquired by Father Walsh who was based at St Joseph’s on The Strand. A presbytery was built adjacent to the church in 1946 after it became a separate parish, to house the new priest Father Kelly.
