West End Hotel

This two-storey brick hotel was built in late 1885 by George Simpson and Peter Deane. It has had a long line of publicans over the years, beginning with George Smith in December 1885.The hotel comprised a bar, three sitting rooms, a large dining room, and a billiard room on the ground floor. Upstairs was a large parlour, eight bedrooms and a bathroom. It also provided stabling for travellers horses. The hotel was built opposite the showgrounds and was particularly popular during show time. It was extensively damaged by Cyclone Sigma in 1896, with the hotel and balcony roofs lost. It is likely that it also suffered during Cyclone Leonta in 1903 and Althea in 1971. The hotel continues to operate, having been regularly maintained and reconstructed over the years.
