Schmidt Farmhouse & Outbuildings (2015)

This tiny timber farmhouse, a slab barn and a creamery on Worongary Road are rare remnants of the early dairying industry of the Gold Coast hinterland. The land was part of the 'Murry Jerry' pastoral lease, taken up by the White Family of Beaudesert in 1852. It changed hands in 1880, transferred to the widow of Thomas Blackett Stevens, the former owner of the Moreton Bay Courier newspaper. In 1912, the subdivided property was transferred to German immigrant Carl Schmidt, who also had dairying land in nearby Mudgeeraba. The Schmidts had leased the property, including the house, from 1901. The youngest daughter Eda was born here in 1903. Schmidt's dairy was small, with 20-30 cows typical of small selector farming practice in the early 20th century. Shortly before her father died in 1931, Eda, now Mrs Kurth, inherited the property. She subdivided part of it and owned it until 1992. Then in 1998, land between the house and the creek was acquired for use as the Mudgeeraba Showgrounds. In recent times the property has been utilised as the Mudgeeraba Light Horse Museum, commemorating the history of the Light Horse and armed services on the Gold Coast.
