WWII RAAF 220 Radar Station

This former radar station is situated on private property at Bones Knob near Tolga on the Atherton Tableland. It played an important role in the protection of ammunition, ordnance and stores depots established on the Tablelands in the early 1940s, as part of the assemblage and training of Australian troops for the final phase of the New Guinea and island campaigns of WWII. The RAAF 220 Radar Station was one of five British-designed Advanced Chain Overseas (ACO) radar stations constructed in Queensland at this time. The site now includes two concrete igloos and the concrete and steel footings of two radar towers which became operational in September 1943. The towers once dominated the site, being more than 40 metres high. This site is not publically accessible.
