Daintree Inn/Former Exchange Hotel

If you are seeking accommodation in a typical country hotel, then stay at the refurbished Exchange Hotel in Mossman. It was built in 1934-5 replacing the original Exchange Hotel, damaged in the cyclone of March 1934. The hotel was designed by Atherton Architect Vibert McKirdy Brown. The decision to build a complete new structure, rather than repair the old, was prompted by the government-supported growth in tourism and the need to provide quality accommodation to support the industry. Cairns was well established as a tourism destination particularly after the completion of the Brisbane to Cairns railway link in 1924. The 1933 construction of the Cook Highway to Mossman served to enhance tourism to the north of Cairns. The White Car Line provided transport on this scenic road. Tourists based in Mossman could then take a bus to the Daintree or a private car to Port Douglas. When the Exchange Hotel opened, it was described as one of the most modern in Queensland, with spacious balconies, running water in every room, septic systems, commodious lounges and a delightful ballroom. It was briefly known as the Daintree Inn during 2012-14.
