Maryborough Government Office Building

The Maryborough Government Offices on Wharf Street are located on land formerly used as gardens fronting the courthouse. Built in 1940, and designed by Public Works architects GR Beveridge and RC Nowland, the building forms part of a precinct of substantial historical, public and commercial buildings. They include the Port Office and Customs House which evolved from the development of the city’s wharves from 1852, the Bank of New South Wales, Customs House Hotel and Post Office Hotel. The new government offices complemented those established on the ground floor of the adjacent courthouse building. It was built as an unemployment relief project during the Depression. Staff employed in the old government insurance building in Richmond Street, and those working in the courthouse, were relocated to this new building. This allowed for the remodelling of the courthouse offices. Internally, the building features the use of Queensland timber joinery, terrazzo flooring in high traffic areas and parquet elsewhere.
