Eden House Restaurant
20 Gillies Highway, Yungaburra
Eden house surrounded by lush tropical gardens is a cool oasis on the Tablelands. The shady verandas of the house lead to the dining room and wine bar of this hospitality venue. Guest cottages and studios are scattered around the property within the landscaped gardens. The date of construction of the house is not clear, most likely around 1900 and possibly as late as 1912. Early property owners included: local dairy farmer George Wedderburn; Arthur Belson, the manager of the Yungaburra sawmill; followed by his daughter Lilian and her husband George Duffy. He was also a dairy farmer turned sawmill manager, and member of the Tinaroo Shire Council. From 1893-96 he was the State MLA for Eacham. The house was known locally as ‘Cedrella’ and originally boasted a tennis court and ‘old English’ gardens. In 1958 it was purchased by Alfred and Alice King who managed the local Tivoli Theatre. Mrs King remained in the house until her death in the late 1980s when the house was converted into a café. It became a restaurant in the late 1990s.
