27 Atherton Road, Yungaburra (1930)

The Whistle Stop Café, is so named because the railway station was located on the opposite side of the road from 1910 until 1964, when the line was closed. Constructed in 1913, this building operated as the Bank of New South Wales from December that year. It appears to have been built by local sawmill manager, Arthur Belson, who then sold the property to the bank in 1922. Yungaburra was an important stop on the railway which reached the town in 1910. The sawmill was established around the same time. Yungaburra had another burst of development after the Gillies Highway from Cairns to Gordonvale opened in 1926. The Bank of New South Wales operated here for more than fifty years. It later operated as a craft store before being re-purposed as a café.
