Wolverton

This private home is not publically accessible. Known as Wolverton, it was built around 1903 for local businessman Thomas Turton and his second wife Emily. Turton was as a painter and decorator and dominated the business in Townsville from 1883. He had a shop in Stokes Street, selling glass, oil, paint, and offering signwriting, painting and glazing services. The land for Wolverton was transferred to Emily in June 1903 and presumably the house was built after that. The Turtons were listed in the postal directories as living on site in 1914. By 1920 the family had relocated to Stanton Hill, taking the name of the house with them. This property was sold in 1923 to Cloncurry businessman and publican of the Post Office Hotel James Brown Miller and his wife Helena. The house was rented out and altered over time. During the 1930s, the house was moved to the side allowing for the creation of an adjoining vacant lot. During the 1950s it was converted into flats. Then in the 1980s Wolverton was restored to its former glory and remains a private home today.
