Urangan Point State School 2016

The tiny school building on Miller Street Urangan is surrounded by more recent classrooms within the Urangan Point State School campus. It was built in 1916 on a different part of the site and relocated twice within the campus; in 1977 and in 2011. Its original design as an open air school reflects the health ideals of the time which advocated the benefits of fresh circulating air. However, this proved to be difficult in the Queensland climate, where canvas awnings had to be installed to protect against the wind and rain, thereby making the interiors dark and stuffy. The canvas blinds were easily damaged and offered no resistance to intruders. By the early 1920s, the sliding sash windows were installed. The building served the Urangan community until 1932, when a new building was completed. This small structure has seen Urangan grow from a sleepy fishing village to its role as the port for Maryborough, following the completion of the Urangan deep water jetty in 1917, and its later role as a sugar port in the early 1950s. The building, known as Block D, was reroofed when first relocated and the original ridge ventilator removed.
