Kingston Pioneer Cemetery

A shady site at the end of Bega Road in Kingston is the final resting place for many of the pioneers of the district. Ten acres were proclaimed as a cemetery reserve in December 1892 and trustees, Charles Kingston, Stephen Rogers, Thomas Armstrong, Allan James Campbell and Alfred William Kingston were appointed in July 1893. The earliest identified grave, that of Frances Armstrong dates to 1896 and the most recent being two burials in 1941. The graves of early pioneers Charles and Harriet Kingston and John and Emily Mayes are located in the cemetery. As was usual, the cemetery was divided according to religious denomination, with an area for Protestants along Bega Road and one for Catholics along Pioneer Lane. These were eventually surveyed as two small reserves from within the original 10 acres in 1964. The remainder became a gravel reserve for a short time, until Kingston College was built on the site in 1977. The cemetery had fallen into disrepair and was vandalised, so the college students embarked on a project to maintain the site. It is now managed by Logan City Council.
