Gympie Railway Station Platform Complex

The Gympie Railway Station is located on Caledonian Hill and comprises a long island platform with a substantial Pagoda style station building, guard’s room, storage room, and subway links to nearby streets. The railway opened in 1881 linking the Port of Maryborough with the gold town of Gympie. Timber was the main freight on the line, as logs were taken to the Maryborough mills for processing. Almost immediately, Gympie residents began campaigning for a line to Brisbane. The first section between Brisbane and Caboolture was commenced in 1886 and the section to Gympie was completed in mid-1891. A new station building was designed by railway architect Vincent Price and built in 1913. The Mary Valley branch line was built in 1915, linking the valley dairy farms with the Gympie butter factory opposite the station. The Gympie railway station celebrated its centenary in 1981, but by the end of the 1980s, it had been relegated to a freight depot. With the electrification of the line and the opening of a new station at Gympie North, this station was rendered redundant and closed in 1996. In 1998, it became the terminus of the Mary Valley Rattler tourist train.
