Tripcony Hibiscus Caravan Park
Bowman Road, Caloundra
A little piece of paradise awaits you adjacent to a very busy intersection at the entrance to Caloundra. Hugging the banks of Pumicestone Creek, the Caloundra Waterfront Holiday Park (previously Tripcony Hibiscus Caravan Park) has operated here since 1957. The history of the site goes back to 1877 when the site was gazetted as a Wharf and Water Reserve, and re-gazetted in 1912 for Camping and Recreation. Early visitors included the crews of Thomas Tripcony’s oyster boats, which marked the boating channel in Pumicestone Passage in 1879. Tripcony later brought the first tourists to Caloundra, landing them and their supplies at this wharf reserve, which became known as Tripcony Flat. Brother Andrew Tripcony started the first store nearby. Subdivision of the Bulcock estate in 1917 and gradual road improvements led to ongoing development of this resort town. The increase in car ownership, the lifting of speed limits for cars towing caravans, and the improvement of facilities in caravan and camping reserves led to caravanning becoming the most popular form of leisure practice in Queensland by the mid-1970s. Many of those participants have now chosen to retire in these ‘holiday villages’ and Caloundra Waterfront Holiday Park now largely comprises permanent residents.
