Host organisation
Yintjingga Aboriginal Corporation

The Lama Lama rangers manage the Running Creek Nature Refuge and wider Lama Lama estate in the Port Stewart area of the Cape York Peninsula. Their country contains a high number of threatened ecological communities and species, including rainforests, birds, marine resources and coastal environments. The rangers are a specialised marine team delivering sea country and coastal estuary. Key activities include:

  • management of sea country, supporting the delivery of the Traditional Use of Marine Resource Agreement and joint management programs
  • junior ranger programs and community forums for progressing sea country management
  • protection of cultural sites on adjacent islands
  • compliance activities and visitor management with key agencies, including joint patrols of coastal and marine environments
  • collaboration with research partners in monitoring important mangrove, seagrass and coral reef ecosystems and marine species (turtles, dugong, sawfish and snub fin dolphins) to inform management decisions.
