Short description Corymbia aspera low open woodland on rocky soils
Structure code Low Open Woodland
Description Corymbia aspera low open woodland with occasional Gardenia pyriformis, Calytrix exstipulata, Buchanania obovata, Cochlospermum fraseri, Eucalyptus miniata, Erythroxylum ellipticum, Ficus spp., Petalostigma banksii, Grevillea spp., Acacia spp. and in the north, Eucalyptus herbertiana and Livistona rigida. Ground cover predominantly Triodia spp. between bare rock. Occurs on rugged stony hills on pre-Cambrian sediments and interbedded acid volcanics; rock outcrop and skeletal soils. Not a Wetland. (BVG1M: 27c).

Vegetation communities in this regional ecosystem include:
1.10.3x1: Mixed woodland which may include Erythrophleum chlorostachys, Lysiphyllum cunninghamii, Corymbia capricornia, Corymbia grandifolia, Eucalyptus miniata, Eucalyptus leucophloia and Eucalyptus chlorophylla. A second tree layer of Terminalia canescens is consistently present. The ground layer is dominated by Triodia spp. Occurs on outliers of rugged stony hills on pre-Cambrian sediments occurring around the margins of subregion 4. Not a Wetland. (BVG1M: 27c).
1.10.3x2: Shrubby low open woodland of Corymbia capricornia. Occasional C. aspera and Terminalia aridicola. Acacias usually prominent. Ground cover of Triodia spp. And annual grasses. Occurs on residual plateaus and scarps on horizontal or gently deformed sandstones and conglomerates; skeletal soils, minor shallow sands. Not a Wetland. (BVG1M: 19a).

Protected areas Lawn Hill (Arthur Creek) RR, Boodjamulla (Lawn Hill) NP, Lawn Hill (Stockyard Creek) RR, Lawn Hill (Widdallion) RR, Lawn Hill (Gorge Mouth) RR, Lawn Hill (Littles Range) RR
Special values 1.10.3: Potential habitat for NCA listed species: Solanum carduiforme.
Fire management guidelines SEASON: Storm season to early dry season. INTENSITY: Low to moderate. INTERVAL: 4 - 10 years. Ensure some areas are long (10-20 years) unburnt. Adjust intervals/frequency according to rainfall-drought cycles, fuel accumulation and previous fire history. INTERVAL_MIN: 4. INTERVAL_MAX: 20. STRATEGY: Ensure burns are undertaken across the landscape at a range of frequencies to create a mosaic of times since fire. Apply numerous small burns every year to achieve a mosaic and reduce risks of wildfire across vast areas of the landscape. Maintain burnt areas < 20%. ISSUES: Rainfall is a major factor affecting spinifex growth, such that a very wet year or a series of wet years may boost the spinifex fuel load leading to the possibility of extensive wildfire in subsequent years. Mixed shrubby woodlands contain fire-sensitive species and tend to grow in fire-sheltered areas.
Comments 1.10.3x1: The tree layer of this community is extremely variable. Occurs on small outliers of Proterozoic sandstone outcropping in the Gulf Plains bioregion around the margins of subregion 4. 1.10.3x2: This vegetation community was previously mapped as 1.10.1.

1 Estimated extent is from version 13 pre-clearing and 2021 remnant regional ecosystem mapping. Figures are rounded for simplicity. For more precise estimates, including breakdowns by tenure and other themes see remnant vegetation in Queensland.
