Vegetation Management Act class | Of concern |
Wetlands | Not a Wetland |
Biodiversity status | Of concern |
Subregion | 7, 10, (5), (11.18) |
Estimated extent1 | Pre-clearing 23000 ha; Remnant 2021 9000 ha |
Short description | Araucarian complex microphyll vine forest on metamorphics +/- interbedded volcanics, usually in northern half of bioregion |
Structure code | Closed Forest |
Description | Microphyll and microphyll/notophyll vine forest +/- Araucaria cunninghamii. Characteristic species include Archidendropsis thozetiana, Argyrodendron sp. (Kin Kin W.D.Francis AQ81198), Croton acronychioides, Cupaniopsis simulata, Dendrocnide photiniphylla, Diospyros geminata, Drypetes deplanchei, Ficus virens, Cryptocarya bidwillii, Planchonella myrsinifolia, Pleiogynium timorense, Vitex lignum-vitae and Vitex acuminata. In places this RE is actively invading adjacent eucalypt forest in absence of fire (e.g. Goodnight Scrub). Occurs on Palaeozoic and older moderately to strongly deformed and metamorphosed sediments and interbedded volcanics. Not a Wetland. (BVG1M: 5a). |
Supplementary description | Bean et al. (1998), G13, I4 and J2 (in part) |
Protected areas | Good Night Scrub NP, Woowoonga NP, Mudlo NP, Dawes NP, Littabella CP, Oakview NP, Cordalba NP, Kroombit Tops NP |
Special values | 12.11.12: Habitat for threatened flora species including Fontainea venosa and near threatened species including Hernandia bivalvis. |
Fire management guidelines | INTERVAL: Fire return interval not relevant. INTERVAL_MIN: 100. INTERVAL_MAX: 100. STRATEGY: Do not burn deliberately. Protection relies on broad-scale management of surrounding country. May need active protection from wildfire in extreme conditions or after prolonged drought. Planned burns should not create a running fire into vine forest. Ensuring conditions of good soil moisture and moisture of litter in surrounding communities will limit fire behaviour/intensity. ISSUES: Fire sensitive and not normally flammable; but it does burn. There may be issues with lantana and other weeds from fire and other disturbance. Remnants may be limited by frequent fire at the margins. |
Comments | 12.11.12: Occurs in north of bioregion. Characteristic localities for the RE are hills near Woolooga, Woowoonga Range and Goodnight Scrub. Cleared for pasture. Remnants can be degraded by weed infestation in conjunction with wildfire damage on margins. |
1 Estimated extent is from version 13.1 pre-clearing and 2021 remnant regional ecosystem mapping. Figures are rounded for simplicity. For more precise estimates, including breakdowns by tenure and other themes see remnant vegetation in Queensland.
