Short description Shrubland of rocky peaks on Mesozoic to Proterozoic igneous rocks
Structure code Shrubland
Description Shrubland or heath sometimes with emergent Eucalyptus acmenoides. Associated with rocky soils derived from Mesozoic to Proterozoic igneous rocks. Not a Wetland. (BVG1M: 29b).
Supplementary description Bean et al. (1998), J25, J28, J29
Protected areas Mount Walsh NP, Warro NP, Kroombit Tops NP, Mapleton NP, Bulburin NP, Mount Eerwah CP, Mount Perry RR
Special values 12.12.10: Habitat for threatened flora species including Daviesia discolor, Cassinia collina, Coopernookia scabridiuscula and near threatened species including Melaleuca formosa, Acacia pubicosta. Habitat for other species with restricted or disjunct distributions.
Fire management guidelines SEASON: Summer to winter. INTENSITY: Low to moderate. INTERVAL: 20-50 years. INTERVAL_MIN: 20. INTERVAL_MAX: 50. STRATEGY: Burn in association with surrounding vegetation. Protection relies on the broad-scale management of surrounding country. Fire exclusion and buffering from fire are not necessary. ISSUES: Some rare and threatened plants (e.g., Kunzea flavescens) require long intervals between fires. There will be a number of obligate seeding species in this community so variability in regime is required. Any planned burning should be conducted in association with plans for surrounding vegetation.
Comments 12.12.10: Higher altitude heaths exhibit a high level of species endemism. Often too small to map at 1:100 000 scale. Subject to over burning (frequent fire favours fire-tolerant species at the expense of fire-sensitive species) and habitat sometimes favoured for telecommunication towers and other mountain top infrastructure.

1 Estimated extent is from version 13.1 pre-clearing and 2021 remnant regional ecosystem mapping. Figures are rounded for simplicity. For more precise estimates, including breakdowns by tenure and other themes see remnant vegetation in Queensland.
