Structure code | Bare |
Description | Springs associated with natural discharge areas from the Great Artesian Basin. Occurs on recent alluvia, ancient alluvia and fine-grained sedimentary rock (shales). Palustrine. (BVG1M: 34e). |
Supplementary description | Habermehl (1982) Ponder (in press); Fairfax and Fensham (submitted); Fensham and Fairfax (2002);Fensham et al. (2004) |
Protected areas | Currawinya NP, Culgoa Floodplain NP |
Special values | 6.3.23: Habitat for near threatened plant including Eriocaulon carsonii, Myriophyllum artesium and Sporobolus pamelae, endemic snails and other endemic invertebrates. |
Fire management guidelines | SEASON: Wet season. INTENSITY: Low. INTERVAL: Fire return interval not relevant. INTERVAL_MIN: 100. INTERVAL_MAX: 100. STRATEGY: Aim to exclude fire by fuel reduction in adjacent vegetation communities where possible. Undertake partial burns when necessary to reduce fuel loads and protect against severe wildfire. Burn with high soil moisture (i.e., after rain/storms) or in winter when fire is more easily controlled. Interval will depend on need for burning, seasonal conditions and grazing pressure. Not to be targeted for burning unless in need of protection. ISSUES: Rarely enough fuel load to burn. |
Comments | 6.3.23: All the springs are within Great Artesian Basin discharge areas. In the Eulo area this regional ecosystem is often associated with granite intrusions (6.12.1). |
1 Estimated extent is from version 13.1 pre-clearing and 2021 remnant regional ecosystem mapping. Figures are rounded for simplicity. For more precise estimates, including breakdowns by tenure and other themes see remnant vegetation in Queensland.
