Description
Oldenlandia gibsonii is a woody densely intricately branched herb that grows to 1m in height. The mature stems have thin, greyish papery bark. The branchlets have small stiff, bristly hairs and the axillary branchlets are short and persist after the leaves have fallen, giving the branches a spiny appearance. Leaves are arranged opposite each other and are narrowly oblong to elliptic in shape, 3-7mm long by 1-2mm wide, and lack a leaf stalk. On older branches, leaves are appear to be clustered due to the short branchlets. The leaf margins are recurved when dry. The upper leaf surface is darker in colour and hairless or covered in minute hairs. The lower leaf surface is paler, with a prominent midrib and is hairless or has small bristly hairs.
The flowers occur in the leaf axils at the very end of the branches. They grow singly from the point where the leaf joins the stem. Each flower is on a slender stalk (pedicel), 1-3mm long and hairless or with sparse bristly hairs. The tubular body of the flower is 4--5mm long and cream coloured with a lilac tinge and faint lilac blotches in the throat. The petal-like lobes at the opening of the tube are triangular in shape and 4-5mm long. The fruit is almost globular in shape, 2mm in diameter and is hairless or has sparse hairs. The capsule has a rounded beak about 1mm long at the tip. The beak does not protrude above the spreading calyx lobes around the top of the capsule. The capsules contain numerous seeds that are light brown, 0.5mm long and depressed obconical or irregular polygonal in shape.
Oldenlandia gibsonii is related to O. polyclada which, however, does not occur in the area. (Halford 1999)
