- Description
- Huperzia lockyeri is an epiphytic or lithophytic tassel fern; it grows on other plants and on rocks. The sterile, tufted branches are at first erect, but become pendulous and branching 1-4 times towards the end of the branches. The branches are 40-70cm long, sometimes rooting at the tips. The leaves are arranged in six rows, in alternating whorls of three around the branch. The leaves are thin but firm, narrowly-ovate to lance-shaped, 9-14mm long by 2.5-5mm wide, dark green and shiny.
The transition from the sterile leaf zone to the sporogenous leaf zone (part of the plant bearing spores) is gradual. The sporogenous zone of the branch is 4-8cm long. The sporophylls (leaves bearing spores) are overlapping, lance-shaped, 5-7mm long and 2mm wide. The spore-cases occupy one-quarter of the sporophylls length. There is an occasional reversion of the leaves from the sporogenous to the vegetative condition. (Chinnock 1998; DEWHA 2008) - Habitat
