Woody Point Memorial Hall

On the northern edge of Bramble Bay is the picturesque village of Woody Point. The School of Arts Memorial Hall nearby was built to commemorate the war service of local residents. Designed by Hubert Thomas, it was opened in March 1922 and included an honour roll honouring 94 Redcliffe men who enlisted. The Humpy Bong Yacht Club held fundraising dances there. In 1928 the hall was altered to include a bio-box allowing movies to be shown. Once the Hornibrook Highway opened in 1935, the number of campers and holiday makers grew. The hall was always a venue for social activities in the holiday season. The School of Arts library had nearly 600 volumes in 1922. By 1923 it had 900 volumes, and the reading room was `well stocked with papers and periodicals' and there were 2035 books in 1931. This collection was transferred to the Redcliffe Shire Library in the late 1940s. While the Woody Point jetty is new, its predecessor was the starting point of the Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race between 1949 and 1954. Parties were held in the hall the night before the race. The hall continues to be a venue for community events.
